Pre-Reunion News

From Sally:

Tuesday afternoon: Joining us again this year will be Roz Brown, whose songs, stories, and "limberjacks" entertained us at the 1996 reunion in Grand Lake. Show up at 4 p.m. for another great show to wrap up our 1999 reunion experience.

Greetings for the planning committee (we are not announcing who we for fear of being banished -- but if you would like to join us please let Sally or me know). The time is getting close -- you can just about feel those first signs of a July Christmas in the air!!!

First and foremost - meals. The committee has decreed that most of your meals will be your own responsibility, so your family can have their own favorite cereals etc.. However for dinner we want to try something new. Each family or family grouping will be responsible for one dinner (and assist with the Christmas dinner where needed). So far we have put together the following plan.

Special note -- if you feel you need to volunteer on other nights please feel free to do so.

There is rumor that Dalen has kept a special supply of canned apricots so don't be surprised to hear that there is at least one special breakfast thrown in for good measure (I believe that it might even be Thursday morning). Also, there is a push from the egg ranch to have a scrambled egg breakfast with all the fixin's.

Starter packs -- the condos are specified to be empty of food when you arrive. We are offering a starter kit of basics that can be purchased in bulk and divided up so that everyone does not have to purchase items such as sugar, coffee, tea and milk. We are estimating that the cost of the started kit will be $15 - $20 but we will need to know who is interested in purchasing this by July 1, so we can go shopping. And speaking of shopping, Winter Park is a regular town with all the conveniences -- meaning that grocery stores are near by.

Now for some activity news!!!!

Paul White, aka white water man, is offering up two days of an 11 mile all-day raft trip. Space is limited (6-8 per day) and you need to email Sally for reservations. This is definitely a first come first served offer. You can book your own trip through commercial outfits if desired.

Christmas -- tree decorating, this will be prior to dinner on Saturday. To prepare for this there will be craft time for the kids to make decorations. In addition, everyone should bring an ornament of their own for the tree. Also, please bring a small gift for the kids, nothing fancy, just something they can unwrap. Loosen up the vocal cords for "caroling" and plan to spend an Colorado evening celebrating Christmas in July.

Chair Lift -- Tickets are $13 for one ride which includes a mountain bike rental (you come down the ski runs) or $19 for an all day pass. A single trip up and back without the bike is $7. There is also an Alpine slide for $8, including a lift trip up. For those of you that have not tried downhill mountain bike riding I can tell you it is a lot of fun as long as the brakes hold out.

Rock festival -- on the weekend
Saturday: Ziggy Marley, Melody Makers, Jamiroquai, Galactic, Ozomatli, Patty Griffin
Sunday: Lyle Lovett (and his band), Susan Tedeschi (isn't that a winery on Maui?), Los Lobos, Tragically Hip Tickets for this are available and run $35 per day.

Group photo -- Please think about this happening Thursday morning or possibly Sunday morning. We have found that waiting to the last day of the reunion to do a group shot is ineffective.

There is also talk of going to the park and doing another photo on the Continental Divide.

Birthday party -- to honor all those who have birthdays around this time and are still celebrating them.

Games -- I'm sure there will be Scrabble boards going, there will be card and other games.

Fishing -- there is a trout pond on the premise and a stream that that can offer some nice trout.

It's not, trust me, that we expect to schedule reunion activities, just that we hope to offer a few possibilities for our get-togethers. The rest of the time is time off for good behavior -- for you to spend any way like. So plan to lounge in the shade or sun, walk in a Rocky Mountain wildflower meadow, or don't plan a thing!!!! It's all up to you.

We look forward to seeing you there and having a great time.

Western Reunion 1999: July 7 through 14, Winter Park CO

Christmas in July? Well, if you're in Winter Park, why not? Join the family for a summer vacation in the Rockies, with all the fun that entails-- as well as the added bonus of getting to know a few cousins (aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.)...

Each family head will get a mailing later this month with details of our proposed location, and each family can book the accommodations of choice. Reservations should be made by October 30 to capture 1998 rates and ensure a location near family. Later bookings may be priced differently.

We will have lots of room for everyone and great flexibility! National forest campsites are available up the road and have some sites that can be reserved in advance. Check in Arapahoe-Roosevelt NF, campgrounds are Idlewild (one mile from Winter Park) and Robbers Roost (abt 5 miles). Our private picnic area next to the Fraser River, lots of big shade trees, close to town and restaurants if desired but with a secluded mountain feel, Hi Country Haus offers condominiums of all sizes and doesnt care how many people you put in em. 2 bdrm sleeps 6 in beds (incl. sofa hideabed); 3 bdrm sleeps 8.

You will be hearing more about this from your reunion committee. Contact Greg (cdnx71a@prodigy.com) or Pat (qbkj47a@prodigy.com) or Billie for information.

Hope to see you next summer!
